MORE than 100 tries were scored at Blairgowrie Rugby Club’s 13th annual Rugby Tens tournament at the JJ Coupar Park at the weekend.
Despite the heavy overnight rain and a very wet morning, the sun came out in the afternoon for the seven competing teams, which included two from Blairgowrie plus teams from Arbroath, Cowal (Dunoon), Crieff, Deeside and Stobswell.
Both Blairgowrie teams got off to a good start, with the Reds beating Stobswell 12-0 with tries from Richie Duncan and Neil MacRae and the Blues beating Cowal 22-0 with tries from Russell Waddell (2), Craig Thoms and Ewan Morrison.
This was quickly followed with a 48-0 win for the Blues against Arbroath with tries from Russell Waddell (2), Russell Edward, Kev Brown, Rory Philip, Craig Thoms, Ewan Morrison and Fraser Maxwell. The Reds drew 12-12 with Crieff with tries from Timmy Watson and Michael Black.
The third round of matches did not go so well for the home sides, with the Blues losing out 0-19 to Crieff and the Reds losing out 7-21 to Deeside with Duncan Campbell scoring their solitary try.
The fourth round of matches saw both Blairgowrie teams back on the winning trail, with the Reds beating Cowal 17-12 with tries from Peter Duncan (2) and Michael Black and the Blues beating Stobswell 17-5 with tries from Fraser Maxwell (2) and Russell Edward.
The fifth round of matches saw the Reds have a convincing 37-5 win against Arbroath with tries from Russell Waddell (2), Michael Black (2), Al Roberston, Timmy Watson and Liam McLaren and the Blues suffering a heavy 0-38 defeat to Deeside.
Deeside had already secured the Cup with five wins and one draw and the two Blairgowrie teams met in the last match of the day to see who would secure the Plate. This turned out to be one of the most keenly contested matches of the day, with the Reds narrowly defeating the Blues 17-15. Neil MacRae, Richie Duncan and Michael Black scored for the Reds and Russell Edward (2) and Rory Philip scored for the Blues.
Alan Proctor, who has sponsored and supported Blairgowrie Rugby Club for many years, presented the Bowl to Crieff, the Plate to Blairgowrie Reds captain Neil MacRae and the Cup to overall winners Deeside.
President Duncan MacRae thanked main sponsors ACTIS and Mr Proctor as well as Jock Turpie for preparing the pitches, Callum Mackintosh and all those who helped mark the pitches, first aiders Sheila MacGregor and Colin Murdoch, referees James Fraser, Bill Bain and Ian Ross, Wacek Leszowski, Ralph Donaldson and Peter Ireland for manning the barbeque, Gordon and Lisa for manning the bar and all the players.
Richie Duncan was awarded player of the day by club coach Mick Bowen.
This Saturday sees Blairgowrie travel to Dundee to play Stobswell in the first round of the National Bowl competition. Team selection and travel arrangements will be announced at training, which takes place at 7pm on Thursday at the JJ Coupar Park.
