Hillwalking: Members head to Angus Glens

BLAIRGOWRIE and District Hillwalking Club headed into the Angus Glens on Sunday (January 24) for the Club walk to be greeted by receding snow lines and misty overhead conditions.

Undaunted, the members set off on various routes commencing in Glen Clova and Glen Doll.

The first of five groups started at Rottal Lodge, on the east side of Glen Clova and headed east to the summit of White Hill. Finding difficulty navigating in the white-out conditions on this featureless hill, this group soon descended to lower ground and headed to the Clova Hotel for early refreshment.

The second group started a few kilometres further north at Wheen Cottage and headed on a circuit including a traverse of Ben Tirran and Loch Wharral to Green Hill and Loch Brandy before dropping down to also end their day at Clova Hotel.

The third party set off through Glen Doll Forest, starting at Braedownie and headed for Corrie Fee. They continued to ascend the corrie head wall ascending to the summit of the munro, Mayer and continued to the Shank of Drumfollow to their descent route back to Braedownie.The fourth party also commenced at Braedownie and ascended part of the Shank of Drumfollow before returning to their start point.

The fifth and final group started near to the visitor centre in Glen Doll and headed towards Moulzie and Bachnagairn taking in some steep ground on the curiously named Juan Jorge on Moulzie Craig.

Periods of mist and light rain were interspersed with partly blue skies and the occasional views from higher ground.

The next club walk will be on Sunday, February 14, and is planned for the Glen Falloch area, south of Crianlarich. Coach transport for this meet will leave from Alyth at 7.45am and from Blairgowrie at 8am. Any member or visitor to the Club will be made welcome and is requested to register their interest with the meet secretary on 01828 650409.

Club treasurer, Nina Bell reminded members that there are still tickets available for the ceilidh which will be held in Coupar Angus on Saturday, February 20, but warned that these tickets were selling fast. Any member wishing to attend this event should procure tickets as soon as possible.
