Coupar Angus 5 Perth Villareal 1
A CLINICAL hat-trick from young Paul Maloney, plus a goal a-piece from Derek Lomas and Craig McFadden moved Coupar Angus four points clear at the top of the league on Saturday.
With club captain, Ross Pitkeathly suspended for two games and full back Michael Murray off sledging in Canada until May, this gave a chance for Steven Duvall and Chris Farquarson to stake a claim for getting back in the team. Both players did not disappoint.
Coupar Angus opened the scoring on 20 minutes. A shot-come-cross from Jamie Feaks looped over the Perth Villareal keeper's head, hit the bar and fell to the feet of Derek Lomas, who had the easy task of kicking the ball over the line.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when a great through ball from Derek Townsley after a mazy run, found the feet of Paul Maloney, who ran in on goal and finished with a well placed shot. Maloney was to make it 3-0 on 40 minutes. Again it was courtesy of a great defence splitting pass, this time from captain for the day, Stewart Sheed. Maloney stuck the ball away to the keeper's right hand. With five minutes of the first half remaining, Villareal pulled a goal back.
The scoreline stayed the same until 70 minutes. After some nice footwork from Derek Lomas out wide on the right, he delivered a well driven cross into the Villareal box where the in-running Paul Maloney threw himself at the ball to finish with a breathtaking diving header. Craig McFadden made it 5-1 on 85 minutes minutes with a bulleting header from a Derek Townsley corner to wrap up a well deserved three points.
