Foursome tourney ready to tee off at Kirriemuir Golf Club

THE local area this week plays host to the sixth Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week.

Inaugurated in 2004, the competition has proved popular with golfers from all over the United Kingdom and this year's entry includes participants from the Netherlands and Portugal.

The five local golf clubs involved are Alyth, Blairgowrie, Glenisla, Kirriemuir, and Strathmore, with play being spread over a five-day period commencing on Monday (June 29) and finishing on Friday (July 3).

This year, Kirriemuir Golf Club host the registration and prize-giving. Commitments permitting, North Tayside MSP John Swinney, will present the trophies.

As this year, 2009, has been designated by the Scottish Governement as the Year of Homecoming, the committee have been sponsored by Tullibardine Distillery and a magnificent trophy has been donated which will be played for over the Alyth Golf Course.

There is, as usual, a social side to this week and this will include a quiz night at Glenisla, two evenings of entertainment at Blairgowrie and Strathmore, with an emphasis on the Homecoming Year, and a sell out ceilidh on Thursday evening.

This year the competition has drawn just short of 100 couples and the committee are very grateful to all sponsors for their unstinting support.

Particular thanks are extended to Bellhaven Breweries, Blairgowrie and East Perthshire Tourist Associaton, and Tullibardine Distillery, Blackford, Perthshire.

The staff at the Blairgowrie TIC have again been of invaluable assistance and Jessie and her staff are available during this week to help and offer any assistance that may be required.

During the week the committee will be announcing the launch of a new golf competition for 2010 which they hope will encourage many other golfers to come and enjoy the excellent golf courses and friendly accommodation for which this particular part of Scotland is now recognised.
