Girl's cheekbone broken for phone

A schoolgirl had her cheekbone broken as she was robbed at knifepoint during her lunch break, police said.

Two schoolgirls, aged 14 and 15, were in Queen's Park on Glasgow's southside at around 2pm on Thursday when they were approached by a group of four people.

Strathclyde Police said a girl from the group started talking to the schoolgirl. Then a man, aged between 17 and 19, took out a knife and demanded the 14-year-old's mobile phone.

The girl refused and the man pulled her to the ground, injuring her face. He then took the other girl's phone and ran off with the rest of the group.

The injured girl was taken to nearby Victoria Infirmary with a broken cheekbone.

Detective Constable Phillip Kennedy said: "This was a terrifying attack on two young schoolgirls who were simply minding their own business on their lunch break. One of the young girls sustained a nasty injury to her face as a result of this horrible incident.

"I would like to speak to anyone who may have been within the park at the time the incident took place, and anyone who may have seen persons matching the suspects' descriptions in the area to get in touch with police."

The girl who started talking to the schoolgirls is around 14 years old with ginger hair, freckles and was wearing a blue tracksuit.

The male attacker had very short fair hair and also wore a blue tracksuit.
