CRICKET correspondent Gordon Croll has expressed his sorrow at the recent death of a former club umpire, Dennis Chambers, who was a bookmaker in Coupar Angus for many years.
“Dennis umpired for a season or so around the time Don Hudson was with us around 1992,” said Gordon.
“Dennis didn’t always do us favours, in fact, I was given out leg before more times that season than I care to recall! With the bookmaker facing me, the odds were not in my favour so to speak!
“As I recall, Dennis was from Nottingham, and very keen on his cricket. He was always interested to hear how we were getting on and he will be missed by all at the cricket club.
“As well as his love of cricket, Dennis was a very good bowls player and was at the bowling championships at Ayr only last year.”
