A PLAN to breathe new life into Coupar Angus will be considered by council bosses today.
Drawn-up alongside the local community council, the scheme could result in the introduction of a zebra crossing and short-term access for cars in the area known locally as the Cross.
A total of £200,000 was secured from the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund (TCRF) for the project last year.
Perth and Kinross Council are also contributing £50,000.
The work will complement a programme already underway to re-vitalise the East Perthshire town as part of its Townscape Heritage Initiative.
A new pedestrian crossing and two new parking areas on the north side of the Cross were mooted at one stage – as well as the installation of a zebra crossing on Union Street – but rejected following a public consultation.
A more ambitious project, which would have pedestrianised both the Cross and High Street areas and allowed for markets and other events to take place, was also rejected by local residents.
Perth and Kinross Council’s enterprise and infrastructure committee vice-convener, Councillor Ann Gaunt, admitted she was “disappointed” local residents opted for the less ambitious project.
She continued: “We are extremely lucky to have been awarded £200,000 from the TCRF.
“This gives us a huge opportunity to transform Coupar Angus and give it a centre that befits the town.
“Arriving at this point has been an often difficult process.
“Following consultation on the first two schemes we have drawn up a third option, which we believe goes some way to addressing concerns expressed by local residents and businesses – and represents the best possible compromise.
“The award of the TCRF money is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform Coupar Angus town centre for the benefit of local business and residents,” she said.
