Traders in Blairgowrie’s High Street and Allan Street have raised concerns that business may be affected when the roads are closed next month.
Perth and Kinross Council is to carry out essential road works in the town for four weeks which will see parts of the High Street and Allan Street closed for a week at a time and local diversions in place.
A local shop owner said: “I understand the work has to be done and there is never a right time to do it but I’m concerned that it could affect trade.”
Kate Fleming from the Blairgowrie Merchants Association has premises in Allan Street. She said: “This work has to be done. We have known ever since the one way system was introduced all those years ago that work like this would cause problems when it needed to be done.
“However, I think Perth and Kinross Council has worked very hard to come up with a plan that will cause the least amount of disruption possible under the circumstances and they have been very helpful in keeping us informed.
“They are writing to everyone affected to let them know what is happening and the plans for the work are available for anyone to see in my shop.
“The road is in a bad state and at least the work is being done in November rather than the immediate run up to Christmas.
“Blairgowrie will still be very much open for business while this work is being carried out.
“There will be local diversions in place and the pavements will remain open.
“So long as the diversions and car parking signs are clear then this is a necessary inconvenience which is not insurmountable.”
Perth and Kinross Council has advised that the roadworks on the High Street and Allan Street will start on Monday, November 5.
The works are expected to take three weeks to complete and will include the excavation and reconstruction of part of the road between John Street and Upper Mill Street, and resurfacing between Upper Mill Street and Leslie Street.
The works will be carried out in four phases with diversions as follows:
Phase 1 - from John Street to Brown Street with traffic diverted via John Street, George Street and Brown Street.
Phase 2 - from Brown Street to Upper Allan Street. Diversion route via John Street, George Street, James Street and Upper Allan Street.
Phase 3 - from Upper Allan Street to Upper Mill Street with traffic diverted via Upper Allan Street, James Street, George Street, Newton Street, Perth Street and William Street.
Phase 4 - resurfacing work from Upper Mill Street to Leslie Street, also including a section of resurfacing at the John Street junction. During this work it will be necessary for periods of time to close the road at the John Street junction and also at Upper Mill Street. When the latter is closed, the diversion will be as for Phase 3 of the works.
The council regrets any inconvenience during the works.
